The Barns on the Green Farm

The old barn on the left was probably the second Green barn, likely built sometime around 1855. It was already old by the time the new gambrel‑roof dairy barn went up in the 1910s. By the time I came along, the two barns stood side by side — one from the pioneer era, one from the dairy boom — like an accidental before‑and‑after picture.

This is the only picture I have that shows both barns. It was taken from the northeast, before the hillside was covered with trees. The old barn suffered a fire sometime before the 1940s, as Dayton children in my youth played a great game of tag/hide in the remnants of the interior. It was finally torn down in 1955. The new barn also died by fire in 1989, but the cows were long gone by then.
