Hezekiah Bacon

Hezekiah Bacon,1 2 son of Joseph Bacon 3 and Mary Clark 3 4, was born 1 Nov 1833 in , Coggeshall, Essex, England,1 2 5 6 was christened 13 Apr 1834 at a non-conformist Protestant church in Coggeshall,7 and died 17 Sep 1887 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois8 at age 53.

In 1841, he appeared on the census in Halstead, Essex, with his parents, one older brother and four sisters. His father, mother, and older brother were all employed as silkweavers. 9
In 1851 he again appeared on the census in Halstead with his parents. Two younger brothers had been added to the family in the intervening ten years. Both parents and four of the children, including Hezikiah, were silkweavers. 3

Hezekiah married Sarah Ann Davey 12 7 Mar 1852 in Halstead.13 Sarah was born in Dec 1834 in Halstead5 and died in 191512 at age 81. They had five children: Sarah A., Hezekiah C., Frances, Emily, and Laura.

Hezekiah and Sarah appeared on the census in 1861 on Parsonage Street in Halstead with three children, Sarah, 8, Hezekiah, 7, and Frances, 5.

5Hezekiah departed alone from Liverpool for the United States in 1867, arriving in New York on December 12 on the ship Aleppo. 10 How he got to Dayton where he appeared on the census in 1870 in Dayton, La Salle County, Illinois, is not known. He is shown living in the household of William Lancaster, who was also born in England and is a wool sorter at the Dayton Woolen Factory, where Hezekiah is working as a weaver.

11In 1872 Sarah left England to join Hezekiah, arriving in New York on October 21 on the Batavia. With her was their daughter Emily, age 4. 16 Two other daughters remained in England; Frances, who married Wallis James Spurgeon 24 and the youngest child, Laura, who was living with the Spurgeons in 1881. 23 By 1880 Hezekiah, Sarah, and Emily had moved to Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, where Hezekiah was again employed as a weaver. 2 Their two oldest children, Sarah Ann and Hezekiah Charles, left England and joined their parents in Jacksonville.

After Hezekiah’s death in 1887, Sarah lived in Jacksonville with her daughter Emily, who had married Norman Nichols 17 26 1 Nov 1888 in Jacksonville. Emily was widowed by 1900 and her son Charles also lived with her. 17
